Interview with Anthony Chen and Zhou Dangyou, director and actress of The Breaking Ice, presented at the 76th Festival de Cannes in Un Certain Regard
The Breaking Ice: In his Gen Z “Jules & Jim” homage, The Breaking Ice, screening at the 76th Festival de Cannes in the Un Certain Regard section, Anthony Chen depicts two boys and a girl, in their early 20’s, bonding over a drunken weekend in cold wintry Yanji, a city on China’s northern border. Zhou Dangyou, who plays Nana, a charming tour guide, describe her character and how she’s fond of this role. Chen talks about Gen Z and how coming of age implies universal struggles that are common to every generation and every person in their post adolescence’s path to adult life.
