PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Martin McDonagh, director of the film The Banshees of Inisherin.
An interview with filmmaker Martin McDonagh about his new movie, The Banshees of Inisherin. The film was presented in competition at the 79th Venice International Film Festival. McDonagh talks about returning to County Galway, which inspired so many of his plays early in his career, and blending reality and fiction with the setting of Inisherin and the time of the Irish Civil War. He also talks about working once again with Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson for the first time since 2008’s In Bruges and, drawing from one of the driving themes of the movie, he shares his thoughts on whether it is necessary for one to make sacrifices in order to flourish in life, particularly in the arts.
The Banshees of Inisherin: Set on a remote island off the west coast of Ireland, The Banshees of Inisherin follows lifelong friends Padraic and Colm, who find themselves at an impasse when Colm unexpectedly puts an end to their friendship. A stunned Padraic, aided by his sister Siobhan and troubled young islander Dominic, endeavours to repair the relationship, refusing to take no for an answer. But Padraic’s repeated efforts only strengthen his former friend’s resolve and when Colm delivers a desperate ultimatum, events swiftly escalate, with shocking consequences.
